The original story was based on an actual incident that took place in Touraine by a French official, Jean Nicolas Bouyi, and was very popular at the time for the heroic spirit underlying its unique setting in which a woman disguises herself as a man to rescue her imprisoned husband. The first opera based on this story was Gaveau's "Leonore," completed about seven years before the first draft of Beethoven's "Leonore.
