Schubert composed these two symphonies in the middle of his career. Both were conducted and premiered by Schubert's friend, violinist and conductor Otto Hatwig. While "Symphony No. 5," with its small-scale composition without timpani and lovely music, has been performed relatively often, "Symphony No. 6" has not been heard very often, despite its substantial structure reminiscent of his late masterpiece, "Great".
