Description:
Guarnieri's father was an Italian immigrant who loved music and named his children Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, and Verdi. Camargo Guarnieri, whose real name was Mozart, showed precocious genius in piano playing and composition, which his mother taught him, but later wrote only M. instead of Mozart and took his mother's maiden name, Camargo, as his name. Guarnieri was influenced by the nationalistic ideas of Brazilian writer, poet, folklorist, and musicologist Mario di Andrási, and tried to revolutionize Western classical music through the language of Brazilian music. Most of his choros, unlike traditional Brazilian choros, are written in the concerto style with three movements or three parts. The "Flores de Tremembe" (Flowers of Tremembe), named after a town near São Paulo, is also in three parts, and the third part in particular has a full-blown Latin groove, with a 20th-century style, the melancholy of the slow movement, and the hot passion of the fast movement. The slow movement is full of melancholy, while the fast movement is full of hot passion, and has a very Brazilian atmosphere. The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, conducted by São Paulo-born Roberto Tibirisa, and its principal players are the core members of this performance. *This disc is part of the "Brasil em Concerto," a major project led by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to perform and record approximately 100 works composed between the 19th and 20th centuries by Brazilian orchestras.
