Stravinsky (1882-1971)
Description:
The first installment of the Stravinsky series by Jurowski & the LPO! Now Honorary Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (2021-), Jurowski (born 1972) spent a year in 2018 (then Chief Conductor, 2008-2021) conducting the Stravinsky Festival "Changing Faces" series, which will be released in three volumes The first installment of the series is now available. This concert series was well received locally, as it was a good project to perform Stravinsky's works in chronological order of composition, allowing the audience to get a real sense of the changes in Stravinsky's compositions. The first program includes Stravinsky's earliest works up to "The Firebird. The first volume includes works from his early period up to the "Firebird," including works that were strongly influenced by his teacher and works that already anticipated the "Firebird," and are truly intriguing. Jurovsky draws out all kinds of tones from the orchestra at will, and he is now a master of his art. Jurovsky's focus on the point and the clarity of his playing make Stravinsky's music sound more alive than ever. The recording, which captures everything, is also superb. ≪The "Firebird" was also the subject of Jurovsky's first appearance in the LPO subscription concert series in 2002. The recording of "The Rite of Spring" (2008) as a fill-up is also a nice touch.≪The "Symphony No. 1" and "The Shepherd's Daughter" were composed in 1905 and 1906, respectively, under the guidance of R. Korsakov. ≪The "Symphony" is reminiscent of Borodin, Glazunov, and Tchaikovsky, but it also shows the young genius who would soon compose the "Firebird". ≪The "Pastorale" is a suite of Pushkin's poem about a young girl's escape from a lecherous pastor, accompanied by a richly resonant orchestra, reminiscent in places of Wagner. ≪The "Funeral Song," a work that made headlines in 2015 when it was discovered at the St. Petersburg Conservatory for the first time in nearly a century, was composed as a memorial to R=Korsakov (summer composition of 1908). The idea is that each instrument of the orchestra leaves a flower in front of the grave of his former teacher, and the work is not only dark, but also shows an interest in "ritual" with its extensive use of chromatic harmony. ≪The "Fantastic Scherzo," composed two years before the Firebird, is reminiscent of "The Magic Garden of Caschei" (and shares the appearance of three harps). Angharad Lyddon is a mezzo-soprano from Wales. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, she made her opera debut in 2015. She is a remarkable performer who is expanding her career in opera, especially in the UK. In addition to opera, she has appeared in a concert of Bach cantatas conducted by Gardiner. He has also performed with the LPO under Jurowski in Stravinsky's Pulcinella and Requiem Canticles.
