Roger Norrington, Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra
Description:
The only one of its kind, with a unique transparency and tenacity, this recording was made nearly 10 years after Norrington, a master of period orchestras, was appointed chief conductor of the modern Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. The recording was made at a time when his sound, based on fast tempo and restrained vibrato but characterized by calm and rich expression, had become a characteristic of the orchestra. The tempo is fast from the beginning, but it does not just flow smoothly, and there are many instances where the tempo is slowed down, allowing the listener to fully appreciate his unique singing spirit with unexpected persistence.
