Sumo is Japan's national sport, a form of traditional wrestling that dates back centuries. In sumo, two wrestlers, known as 'rikishi,' face off in a circular ring. The objective is simple: the first wrestler to force his opponent out of the ring or make any part of his body, other than the soles of his feet, touch the ground loses the match. Sumo wrestlers, easily recognized by their hefty build and the 'mawashi' or belt they wear, engage in rituals rooted in Shinto tradition before each bout.
