This is one of two artworks found in Nashville that were done by 80+ year old women, both in the late 1910s, which in and of itself makes me happy, and even more happily they are both great things. The age of the makers also reminds one of the fact that things made by a person at one point in time carry that maker's whole history of reference points, and indeed, I think the manner of painting on dog, painted in 1918, oil on wood, has a strong mid 19th century aspect to it. (There were these almost trompe l'oeil style painting of cats and dog on panels it keeps reminding me of, but now that I'm looking I can't find an example.) It is also a painting that holds together at a significant distance, with a great graphicness and boldness to it--I spotted it from way afar and it just jumped off the wall and summoned me. A white Papillon I believe, and I want to call her Princess! With those front paws so perfectly poised, and the door of her doghouse, I presume, arching around her like a lucky horseshoe. Super.

13 3/6" x 10". Oil on wood panel, signed Angie Montgomery not once but twice on reverse, aged 84, 1918 I believe it reads.  A little paint loss to the reddish brown as evident, which mostly falls way; otherwise very good condition and truly popping off the way especially when viewed from a distance.
