7th Infantry Regiment - Cottonbalers

The 7th Infantry Regiment is an infantry regiment in the United States Army. In its 200-year history it has participated in 12 wars, been awarded 78 campaign streamers, and 14 unit decorations. The regiment has served in more campaigns than any other infantry unit in the United States Army. It is known as "The Cottonbalers" for its actions during the Battle of New Orleans, while under the command of Andrew Jackson, when soldiers of the 7th Infantry Regiment held positions behind a breastwork of cotton bales during the British attack. These actions and the lineage of other units that made up the 7th Infantry give the regiment campaign credit for the War of 1812.

Battle of New Orleans - Birth of the Cottonbalers

The 7th Infantry Regiment earned its "Cottonbalers" nickname during the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815. Under the command of General Andrew Jackson, soldiers of the 7th Infantry used cotton bales as defensive fortifications against attacking British forces. This resourcefulness and determination helped achieve a decisive American victory, and the cotton bale became the regiment's enduring symbol.

The Battle of New Orleans was one of the greatest American military victories of the War of 1812. The 7th Infantry's performance in the battle established the regiment's reputation for courage, tactical proficiency, and the ability to overcome superior enemy forces through determination and innovative tactics.

200 Years of Infantry Excellence

Since the War of 1812, the 7th Infantry Regiment has fought in every major American conflict including the Mexican-American War, Civil War, Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Global War on Terror. The regiment's soldiers have earned numerous unit citations and individual awards for their service.

The Cottonbalers have served with distinction in every theater of operations, demonstrating the courage, determination, and tactical proficiency that defines the infantry. The regiment's 78 campaign streamers represent service in more campaigns than any other infantry unit in the Army, a testament to the Cottonbalers' enduring legacy of excellence.
