Very early American sermon preached by David Osgood at the Ordination of Peter Thacher. In an attempt to situate the importance of the American pulpit in the new Country, even over the heroes of the day; political, leaders, and heroes of the American Revolution; Osgood says,

"The Ambassador who succesfully negotiats the affairs of an empire; the statesman whose exertions, whose wisdom and patriotism save a sinking nation; the hero who in the field triumphs over the enemies of his country, - all are entitled to honor, gratitude, and reward. But still, what are all, even the greatest temporal interests of men, compared to their eternal concerns? The salvation of one soul, when eternity is taken into account, must outweigh the temporal salvation of a whole country."
