Stravinsky (1882-1971)
Description:
50th Anniversary Memorial Release of Stravinsky's DeathThe brilliant sound world of Stravinsky, the giant, dynamically portrayed by Bernstein in his prime ⇒ 6-disc set of all remaining Sony Classical recordings of Stravinsky's works. Includes two types of "Harsai"! He was "the last great paternal figure in Western music. His works swallowed all aspects of music, from primitive folk songs to highly refined cello music, from high church music to unpretentious jazz," Leonard Bernstein said in 1972 at a memorial concert for Stravinsky, who had died the previous year. It is curious that Bernstein, whose repertoire was so wide-ranging, left surprisingly few recordings of Stravinsky's works, only nine of which were made for Sony Classical and RCA before 1972. However, all of them are masterpieces that deserve special mention in Bernstein's discography. The most famous of these recordings is the 1958 recording of "The Rite of Spring" (CD 2) with the New York Philharmonic.Recorded at the St. George Hotel in Brooklyn during Bernstein's 1957/58 season as co-chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic with Mitropoulos, this performance is characterized by a more intense emotional expression and rawer feel than the two later performances. The composer himself is known to have said, upon hearing the Bernstein recording, "Wow! The excellent acoustics of the Colorama Ballroom, a huge banquet hall in the St. George Hotel, was used by Columbia Records for a very short period in the late 1950s until the orchestra's home moved from Carnegie Hall to Philharmonic Hall. The recording is also valuable as an outstanding recording that captures the excellent acoustics of the Colarama Ballroom. The "Firebird" Suite from the 1919 version (CD2), the "Concerto for Piano and Winds" (CD3) with the virtuoso Seymour Lipkin as soloist, and the "Pulcinella" Suite (CD3), recorded around the time of this stunning "Rite of Spring," were also highly praised at the time of their release for the rich emotional ups and downs in the performances. CD3), also imprinted with Bernstein's personality. (1/2) Sony Music
