vintage WWII U.S. Army enlisted man's wool overcoat, specifically the M1939 pattern

Key Features and Details

Material: It is constructed from heavy-duty 32-ounce "Melton" wool in an olive drab (OD) color, designed for extreme cold weather.

Design: The coat features a double-breasted front with two rows of Great Seal eagle brass buttons. It also has wide notched lapels (roll collar) and epaulets on the shoulders.

Markings: The stenciled "36" visible on the interior lining typically refers to the chest size (36 inches). Many of these coats also contain a white quartermaster tag inside a pocket with the specific date of manufacture (often between 1939 and 1942). 

Historical Context

This pattern was the standard winter issue for U.S. Army enlisted men and NCOs at the start of World War II. While largely replaced by lighter field jackets later in the war, these overcoats remained common for service and dress use throughout the conflict and were sometimes reissued during the Korean War.
