Prior to Villa-Lobos, only a few Brazilian composers had written works that were named "symphonies. It is believed that Oswaldo's Symphony No. 1, written a little before his time, was premiered around 1917, but it is not known whether this piece influenced Villa-Lobos. Rather, Villa-Lobos' interest at the time was in French music, and it is possible to explore the similarities between these two symphonies and the works of Fauré and Dandy. The First Symphony sometimes displays a Brazilian passion, while the Second Symphony, originally conceived in 1917 but reconsidered by the time of its premiere in 1944, shows a mature technique. The titles of Villa-Lobos's symphonies are all imaginative, but they do not directly describe the work, and it is assumed that this second symphony also depicts the composer's state of mind at the time.
