This image, now part of the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection, exemplifies Salle’s distinctive visual language—juxtaposing layered imagery, psychological tension, and cinematic framing. The composition is divided into two contrasting panels: on the right, a nude woman rests on her knees with her right arm extended over the back of a chair, rendered in soft grey tones that evoke classical chiaroscuro; on the left, a dense field of black dots on a charcoal background heightens the visual drama. Salle’s interplay of light and shadow, intimacy and abstraction, creates a subtle dissonance typical of his early 1980s work.
