「ポルト・リガトの聖母」はピエロ・デッラ・フランチェスカ作の「天使と六聖人と聖母子」を基に描かれた作品で、フランチェスカと構図やポーズは同じものの、ダリの作品では、全体が分離され浮遊された状態で描かれています。

この頃のダリはカトリック思想の回帰を始めており、さらに第二次世界大戦によって原子構造に関心を持ち始めた時期でもあったので、作品の中で宗教への回復と科学信仰という矛盾した状態を表現していました。

 その思想は、聖母マリアとマリアのひざの上に座る幼いキリストの胴体が、それぞれ四角にくり抜かれて、マリアの腕が切断されている部分に表されており、原子力時代の到来と破壊を表現しています。
