Description:

Moravian composer Paul (Pavel) Vranitsky, who moved to Vienna at the age of 20 and became an important composer in the Viennese musical world, associating with Haydn and Mozart, became a favorite of Maria Theresa, wife of Emperor Franz II, who often asked him to compose festive music for the court and for stage performances. She often asked him to compose music for court ceremonies and stage productions. This ballet, "The Cunning Village Girl," is part of Maria Theresa's collection. The year of the performance is unknown, and no script has survived, but the lively folk-dance style of the music is charming, and by analogy with other works of the same title from the same period, it is thought to have been a work about a love match in a rural setting. The ballet divertissement "Vorstellungen" (meaning "Imagination," "Acting," etc.) was a work for the emperor's birthday in 1803. Although no scenario has survived, it is assumed to be a dramatic and varied pantomime that began with a stately introduction in D minor.
