Description:

Ravel Returns to the Basque CountryRobert Trevino (b. 1984), the highly acclaimed conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, which he just assumed as chief conductor in 2019, recorded the complete Beethoven symphonies and released them on the ONDINE label in 2020 (ODE-1348). His new album is a collection of Ravel's orchestral works led by the Basque National Orchestra. Although categorized as a French composer, Ravel's mother is Basque. Although he was born in the French Basque Country and emigrated three months later, he was highly interested in Basque culture due to his mother's influence. Here is a rare Ravel recording by the Basque National Orchestra, the seat of that culture. The six pieces, from the opening "La Valse" to the final "Bolero" after "La Bavane des Princes", depict Ravel's admiration for the Basque Country and showcase Trevino's skill in weaving a magical and exquisite sound from the orchestra. This is one of the most remarkable recordings of the year 2021. The Basque National Orchestra was founded in 1982 as a project-based orchestra. It has since grown into a permanent symphony orchestra representing the Basque Country and now gives more than 100 concerts a year. Since the 2017/18 season, the orchestra has been led by Robert Trevino. Naxos Japan
