Herbert von Karajan, the great conductor of the 20th century, reigned supreme in the world of classical music with his outstanding musicianship and charisma. The performance of Dvořák's "From the New World" by Karajan in his later years was filmed with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, with which he had a closer relationship than with the Berlin Philharmonic, and the graceful and sparkling sound of the Vienna Philharmonic is a great attraction. The way in which the film skillfully captures the movement of the melody, as if it were an unraveling of Dvořák's orchestral technique, is truly a Karajan specialty. (C)RS
