Published pre-common school era, "the following pages are adapted especially to those families, which move in the higher circles of life; but they contain much, that may be interesting and useful to those in humble stations" (v). Addresses the parent's role in discipline and modeling behavior; is against both corporal punishment and, interestingly, "emulation," which he argues promotes good performance executed for the sake of others' attention, rather than a sense of principle which can guide children independently.
