• Emission Standards: Typically found on engines manufactured between 2010 and 2026 (EPA10, EPA13, and GHG standards).

1. Chemical Reaction: As exhaust gases pass through the module, they react with a coating of precious metals (the catalyst).

2. NOx Reduction: When used with Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), the module helps convert Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen gas and water vapor.

3. Particulate Filtering: It often works in tandem with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to ensure the engine meets EPA emissions standards.

•  Active Derate / Limp Mode: The most obvious sign. To comply with emissions laws, the ECM will significantly reduce engine horsepower and torque if it detects the catalyst is no longer cleaning the exhaust properly.
• High DEF Consumption: If the catalyst is inefficient (due to "poisoning" or thermal damage), the system may inject excessive amounts of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to try and compensate, resulting in unusually high DEF usage.
• Frequent Regeneration (DPF) Cycles: While the catalyst is separate from the DPF, a failing aftertreatment system can cause backpressure issues or sensor errors that trigger the engine to "regen" more often than normal.
• Fault Codes (MIL/Check Engine Light):

1. NOx Conversion Efficiency Codes: (e.g., Code 3582 or 4364) - These indicate the outlet NOx levels are too high compared to the inlet.

2. NOx Sensor Codes: (e.g., 3216 or 3226) - Sometimes a faulty module mimics a bad sensor, or vice versa.

• Visible Crystallization: White, chalky deposits (urea crystals) at the outlet of the module or around the gaskets, indicating a leak or a failure in the decomposition process.
