I wonder how to play the piano to get such a tone. Tonou Naisseau's piano is gentle, beautiful, and has a sparkling melody. This is the origin of the sound Sawano seeks. I met Mr. Sawano in Tokyo for the first time in a while, and we talked about the year-end concert, his days at Sawano Shokai, and his favorite records. At that time, he handed me a copy of this album, saying, "This is my next release. Tonu Naiso is a veteran Estonian pianist who has been active since the 1960s and has known Sawano for more than 15 years, since 2005's With a Song in My Heart. Although there is an interval of about five years between releases since their last album, 2017's "1967," Sawano says there is "unshakeable trust" between the two. I, on the other hand, have been involved in jazz CD sales for more than 20 years. I have listened to Atelier Sawano's works almost in real time, and of course I have listened to all of Tonu's works.His piano is gentle, beautiful, and has a sparkling melody. For example, Tr. 01 "Udont it be Lovely?" is a perfect example of Tonu's world, right from the intro. The lovely three-beat Tr. 06 "Sum Time A Go" is a performance that shows the same individuality. As soon as the theme ends, there is a bass solo, and from there the song proceeds as if in dialogue with the bassist. Coltrane's Tr. 02 "Naima" may seem a bit of a surprising choice, but it is a truly melancholic piece. The last two songs are a bit old-fashioned. Especially, how about the staccato expression of Tr.08 "Gee's Foolish Things," don't you think it draws you in? I think it's a very good piece, and I think I know what "unshakable trust" means.
