Weiland, Douglas (1954-)
Description:
British composer Douglas Weyland is hailed as one of the "most important British string quartet composers of the 20th century" for the success of his String Quartet No. 1, published in 1985. This album contains "No. 4" and "No. 5" written in 2011 and 2012. No. 5, which opens with a simple melody, maintains a classical atmosphere while developing freely with unexpected developments. The second movement titled "Tuscan Siciliano," which forms the core of the entire work, and the final movement with an introduction are also full of unexpected music. Although based on the key of B-flat, it has little sense of tonality, and especially the unstable ideas in the second movement, designated "Misterioso" (mystically), make us realize that this work was written in the 21st century. The lively third movement, the beautiful fourth movement reminiscent of Schubert and Haydn, and the violent fifth movement reminiscent of Bartók's works, all have a richly varied and distinctive flavor.
