Verdi (1813-1901)
Description:
Luigi & Philharmonia Zurich Session Recording of Verdi's Overtures! Luigi's selection of overtures, including the treasured overture to "Aida," Verdi composed 26 operas during his lifetime, but less than half of them are frequently performed. The latest 2017 session recording by the Philharmonia Zurich, led by Fabio Luisi, features Verdi's operatic overtures and preludes. The recordings are evenly spread throughout Verdi's creative period as an opera composer, from his early "Jeanne d'Arc" and "The Battle of Legnano," reminiscent of Donizetti and Rossini, to Verdi's mid- and late-period masterpieces, including "La Forza del Destino," "Don Carlos," "Aida," and "La Traviata." Of particular note is "Aida. The overture (11 minutes long) is not the usual 3-minute prelude, but a symphonia that has been kept in the collection. This was written by Verdi for the premiere at La Scala in Milan after the premiere in Cairo. However, it was never performed at the La Scala premiere, and was reprised by Toscanini in 1940, some 70 years later. Also, in the various versions of "Don Carlos," a French version in five acts with ballet music was performed. The orchestra of the Zurich Opera House, the Philharmonia Zurich, is unique in its selection of music and dramatic performance, and Fabio Luisi's speciality, Verdi, is brought together with a deft hand.
