This is a genuine fossil of the extinct ammonite genus Cleoniceras. Ammonites were marine mollusks related to modern squids and octopuses, and are especially prized for its elegant spiral shell and beautiful preservation.
Fossils from Madagascar often show remarkable detail. When polished, the structure of these ammonites displays striking natural colors, ranging from creamy whites and browns to iridescent flashes.
Ammonites like Cleoniceras moved through the oceans using jet propulsion, the same method used by squids today.
