Herbert von Karajan, a great conductor who reigned supreme in the classical music world of the 20th century with his outstanding musicianship and charisma. This is R. Strauss's "Don Quixote" from the "Karajan's Legacy" series, which Karajan worked on energetically during the last years of his life in the 1980s. Karajan had made several recordings with Rostropovich, Fournier, and other greats, but this is a superb recording with newcomer Antonio Meneses, whose sensitive expression and dialogue with R. Strauss, who skillfully musicalized the novel by Cervantes, are outstanding. (C)RS
