These aquacultured Purple Fungia Plate corals are purple with green tentacles. These guys are awesome and one of aquarist Jon Gordon's favorites. For whatever reason it does not appear to be common to find aquacultured Fungia plates. Likely because of this it is rare to find a named lineage. We acquired one from ReefGen in June of 2017.

We offer these corals propagated in two different ways, "anthocauli" or "frag":

"anthocauli" option under Size: The proper term may be Anthocyathus, but hobbyist usually call them anthocauli.(we are uncertain which term is correct)  Anthocauli are formed by a type of asexual reproduction in which small clones "bud off" from a parent coral and separate by fission.  The corals we offer under this name are more circular and flat the the "frags" and closer to what most people would call a "plate".  They may be best placed on the bottom of the tank as they may move around(though we have never seen this species move).  It would not be wise to mount them to a larger rock structure.

"frag" option under Size: These are propagated or "fragged" with more traditional means of coral fragmentation.  Cuttings, often made with a corals saw, are glued to frag plugs.  These frags are usually left for at least 2 weeks(usually much lonter) to begin to grow on, or encrust the plug.  In a healthy aquarium the frag plug disappears under the growth of the coral in 8 months to a year.  These frags can be placed almost anywhere in the aquarium as they are very adaptable.

These miniature Fungias are Laura's carefully cultivated babies. Thanks to a lucky find of some productive Fungia cloning stalks, ReefGen now offers a limited number of small plate corals featuring purple discs, and green tentacles!

This item is a "stock item" meaning the coral you receive may not be the exact one in the picture, but a clone similar in appearance. Sometimes we include images of our mother colonies as well to give an idea of what the corals will grow into under proper care. Approximate size range may also vary between individual specimens.
