Philippe Jordan was born in Switzerland, studied at school in Zurich, and gained experience at various opera houses. He has shown his ability as an "orthodox" conductor by working as an assistant under Daniel Barenboim at the State Opera Berlin. He has further improved his abilities with this orchestra since becoming Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in 2014 (succeeding Fabio Luisi). His interpretations are always limpid and straightforward, and the sound spun from the orchestra is very smooth and beautiful. The "Great" in this album is also a very smooth and full music, without being overbearing. The second movement of "Unfinished" is the one in which his beauty is demonstrated to the utmost limit. The tempo is a bit fast, but the song is wistful and beautiful, and seems to speak to us deeply. Highly recommended for those who want to hear natural Schubert (1797-1828). Naxos Japan
