Asteraceae.

Originally from southern and western Europe and now naturalised to North America. Cultivated in the UK, Belgium, Hungary, the USA, France and Italy. It’s generally accepted that the best Chamomile Roman Oil comes from the UK which is where Amphora source our oils from.

Obtained by steam distillation of the dried flowering heads of the plant.

Harvesting in the UK normally takes place in late June or July. The plant must be harvested at the exact moment where the yield of the essential oil is at its greatest. Small test distillations are done on a daily basis and the resulting oil is analysed using gas chromatography. Once the optimum levels have been reached the plant is harvested and then left to dry in the sun for a short time. Once dry, the flowers are steam distilled to produce the oil.  

Analgesic, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, carminative, digestive, emmenagogue, hypnotic, sedative and tonic. 

Chamomile Roman is often found in aromatherapy massage blends aimed at treating acne, allergy rashes, boils, burns, cuts and abrasions, chilblains, dermatitis, eczema, inflammations, insect bites and stings and sensitive skin. It's also used to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis, swollen joints, rheumatism and muscular pain. 

When burned or vaporised it may help to relieve headaches, insomnia, nervous tension and stress-related issues.

Chamomile Roman blends especially well with bergamot, clary sage, lavender, geranium, jasmine, tea tree, grapefruit, rose, lemon and ylang-ylang.

Chamomile Roman contains naturally occurring Chamazulene which has been  shown to be a good anti-inflammatory.
