If you own a small fishing boat, an inflatable dinghy, or a kayak, carrying a bulky anchor can be a real hassle. This folding grapnel anchor is your practical solution. Made from tough, rust-resistant carbon steel, it folds down to a compact size for easy storage in a tackle box or under a seat, then expands instantly to grip the bottom. Whether you are still fishing in a quiet lake or drifting in a mild river, having a reliable anchor means you stay put. Available in weights from 0.7kg to 4kg, there is a perfect size for almost any small vessel.
| Anchor Weight | Total Length | Opened Diameter | Ideal Boat Length (Approx.) | Kit Option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.7 kg | 19 cm (7.5 inch) | 17 cm (6.7 inch) | 1.75 - 2 meters | Optional: + 20m rope + float |
| 1.5 kg | 32 cm (12.6 inch) | 30 cm (11.8 inch) | 2 - 2.5 meters | Optional: + 20m rope + float |
| 2.3 kg | 34 cm (13.4 inch) | 35 cm (13.8 inch) | 2.5 - 3.6 meters | Optional: + 20m rope + float |
| 2.5 kg | 38 cm (15.0 inch) | 33 cm (13.0 inch) | 2.5 - 3.6 meters | Optional: + 20m rope + float |
| 3.2 kg | 40 cm (15.7 inch) | 37 cm (14.6 inch) | 3.6 - 3.8 meters | Optional: + 20m rope + float |
| 3.5 kg | 42 cm (16.5 inch) | 40 cm (15.7 inch) | 3.6 - 3.8 meters | Optional: + 20m rope + float |
| 4.0 kg | 47 cm (18.5 inch) | 42 cm (16.5 inch) | 3.8 - 4 meters | Optional: + 20m rope + float |
Note: Using the anchor with a rope longer than 20 meters is recommended in deeper water or stronger currents for better holding.
For a single-person kayak or a small inflatable dinghy, the 0.7kg or 1.5kg anchor is usually sufficient in calm waters. For a 2-person inflatable boat or a small aluminum fishing boat up to 3.6 meters, go with the 2.3kg to 3.5kg range. For a boat near 4 meters or if you fish in areas with some current, the 4.0kg anchor provides the best holding power.
The "With Rope" kit includes the folding anchor, a durable white braided nylon rope (20 meters for models under 4kg, 30 meters for models 4kg and up), and a red plastic float ball to help you see and retrieve your anchor line. You also get a plastic zip tie or clamp to help attach the rope securely.
The anchor has a rust-resistant coating, but it is still made of carbon steel. While it holds up well for occasional use in saltwater, it is best practice to rinse it thoroughly with fresh water and dry it off after each saltwater trip. This will significantly extend the life of the coating and the anchor itself.
To set it, simply open the four claws until they lock into position, tie your rope to the top ring, and drop it over the side. The claws will dig into mud, sand, or gravel. To retrieve it, pull the rope sharply upward, and the anchor will usually break free. You can then fold the claws back down for storage.
Grapnel anchors like this one work best in mud, sand, and gravel or weed beds. They can get stuck in rocky bottoms or underwater snags. If you fish primarily in rocky areas, consider a shorter, heavier anchor or a different style like a Bruce or Danforth anchor, but for most freshwater and sheltered saltwater spots, this works great.
