The Mini was arguably the most influential British car of the 20th century. Designed by Sir Alec Issigonis and launched in 1959, the Mini was in production for over 40 years. In the wake of the Suez crisis in 1956, the market for German bubble cars increased dramatically but Leonard Lord, the head of the British Motor Corporation, hated them so much that he laid down the basic specification for the Mini.  Over the many years that the car was in production, there were many variants, but one of the most popular was the estate or station wagon otherwise known as the Countryman.  Whilst the standard model was finished in plain steel, the “Woodie” was also available. The  “woodie” was, as the name suggests, finished with wood detailing similar to the classic Morris Minor Traveller.

Originally badged as the Austin Seven Countryman, our illustration shows the original model sold between 1960 - 1962, featuring an 848cc engine giving a top speed of just 69mph with the 0-60 “sprint” taking a glacial 33.8 seconds!

Nevertheless, the car has become much loved in classic car circles, and as a result, commands high prices when a nice one becomes available!
